Q: How can a home owner recognize when a roof system has problems?
A: All too often, roof system problems are discovered after leaking or other serious damage occurs. Periodic (twice-a-year) inspections often can uncover cracked, warped or missing shingles; loose seams and deteriorated flashings; excessive surface granules accumulating in the gutters or downspouts; and other visible signs of roof system problems. Indoors, look for cracked paint, discolored plasterboard and peeling wallpaper as signs of damaged roof areas.
Q: Can a new roof be installed on top of my old roof?
A: Although it may seem advantageous to install new shingles on top of your old roof because it’s cheaper, faster, and requires less labor, you could be setting yourself up for future costs (and headaches). Unless your current roofing system is completely problem free and only features a single layer of functioning shingles, your new roofing system may fail way too soon.
Here are a few situations where you will need to remove the old roof before completing a reroofing service:
1- Shingles are missing, curled, split, or mossy.
2- The roof decking is sagging due to rot or deterioration.
3- The new shingles are lighter than your current roofing shingles. (This will cause all of the old bumps & ridges to show through the new roofing materials.)
4- Your current roofing system has more than one layer of shingles.
Q: Do you charge for estimates?
A: No, we provide written estimates free of charge.
Q: When I look at my roof, I don’t see any hail damage. Why should I have it inspected?
A: Hail damage can’t be seen very easily. The best thing to do is have your insurance adjuster actually go up on your roof and inspect it for damage. You usually will never see actual holes or indentations. Hail will drastically shorten the life of your roof. Imagine going up on your roof and hitting it a couple thousand times with a hammer. The effect is similar.
Q: How much does a new roof cost?
A: The cost of your roof will depend on its size, shape, slope and the type of material you choose to install. Different roofing materials provide different levels of protection and service life.
Q: What shingle manufacturers do you install?
A: We have experience installing all of the top shingle manufacturers. The number one manufacturer in our area and our recommendation is CertainTeed.
